Final Rites Held for J. Wesley Deal; Zearing Pioneer

Zearing, Nov. 24--Funeral rites were held at the Church of Christ here Sunday afternoon for J. Wesley Deal, 80, pioneer resident of this community, who died at his home in the west city limits on Thursday after a long illness. Relatives an friends from all over the state were present for the services for this highly respected Zearing pioneer.Rev. Kenneth Tuttle of Whitten, a former pastor of the local Church of Christ, delivered the sermon and Rev. R. E. Kearney, pastor of the local Evangelical church, read the scripture and offered prayer. The pallbearers were William Grey, Guy Clatterbuck, E. J. Tisdale, Charles Barnard, C. W. Conway and J. R. Hankins. Interment was in the Zearing mausoleum.
Joseph Wesley Deal was born in Mercer county, Ohio, July 22, 1857, and came to Iowa with his parents in 1865, the family making their home on a farm in Marshall county, north of State Center, and here he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Libby Fenton, Thanksgiving day, Nov. 25, 1880, and his death came just a week before his 57th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Deal established their home in Zearing in 1889 and had lived here since Mr. Deal was a man of fine character and until his health failed was active in church and civic affairs. He is survived by the widow and two children, Mrs. Jennie Perry and Russell Deal, both of Zearing, 8 grandchildren, two brothers, C. M. Deal of Des Moines and E. M. Deal of Lambert, N. J. and three sisters, Mrs. Rachel Springer of Zearing, Mrs. Cora Irvin of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Sarah Bryant of Frederic, Wis.
