THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, August 22, 1901, page 4, column 4. "OBITUARY - Zana Mathews was born October 5, 1899, and died at the beginning of the Sabbath, August 18, 1901. On last Thursday noon she was apparently in her usual health. In the afternoon she became sick and immediately passed into convulsions. Medical aid was summoned at once both from Maxwell and Cambridge. Her ailment proved to be spinal meningitis and of such a virulent type that it baffled all that medical skill and loving care could do. No effort was spared that could in the least contribute to her possible recovery, but despite all her spirit passed away shortly after midnight of the third day of her sickness. So sudden does it seem that we scarce can yet realize that it is true. She was the light of the home. But that light is gone as suddenly as when the evening lamp flickers out in the passing breeze. But in the gloom those that mourn are cheered by the memory of her bright presence, her cheery, sunny ways. Her memory is dear to us. And while the Lord hath taken we remember that the Lord also gave. We give thanks that we were worth to have had her these two bright years. And ever after we must be better because she was given. The funeral was held in the home in Elwell at 3:00 o'clock on Monday afternoon. Rev. Morley spoke from Luke 10:21. After the services at the house the sorrowing friends bore the form of the dear one to the Elwell cemetery, where amid a profusion of flowers that loving hands had prepared, and with words of tenderest ceremony she was laid to await the time when "The earth and sea gives up their dead."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, August 22, 1901, page 10, column 4. "Cambridge - Mrs. Thos. Jarvill was called to Elwell by the serious illness and death of her little niece, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Matthews."
