THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, June 9, 1927. "REV. J. W. MATHEWS - Johnothan** Wilbur Mathews was born in Story county, Iowa, July 27, 1857, and passed away at his home, 500 South Main street, Warrensburg, Mo., June 5, 1927, at the age of sixty-nine years, ten months and eight days. On February 29, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Lena B. Griffith. To this union six children were born, two of whom, Zannah** and Thomas, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn four surviving children, Mrs. W. H. Moore, Ames; G. G. Mathews, of Des Moines; J. G. Mathews, of Tulsa, Okla., and J. D. Mathew, of Springfield, Mo. Also seven grandchildren, a brother, Oscar Mathews, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Mason. As a young man Rev. Mathews studied for the ministry, but did not begin active pastoral work until about sixteen years ago. He served the following charges in the St. Louis conferences: Urich, Alberta, Creighton, Garden City, Strasburg, Kingsville **Editorial note, Johnothan and Zannah is the spelling found in the newspaper article.
