N. J. VENEMAN

MAXWELL -- Funeral services for N. J. Veneman were held at the First Methodist church in Scranton, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1957 at 1 o'clock with Rev. Robert M. Parris officiating.

Mrs. Chas. Hanna and Mrs. Allen Mosier sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross" accompanied at the organ by Mrs. B. F. Friend.

Casket Bearers were Forrest Coughenour, Vernon Coughenoour, Edwin Coughenour, Herman Smits, Jr., Richard Smits and William Smits.

Interment in Maxwell Cemetery, Maxwell, Iowa.

Nelson James Veneman, son of W. J. and Margaret Kirby Veneman, was born near Maxwell, Iowa, July 30, 1872 and died Nov. 2, 1857 at the Greene County Hospital in Jefferson.

His early life was spent on a farm where he attended Rural School and later attending and graduating from the Maxwell High School with the second class that was graduated.

On August 24, 1898 he was united in Marriage with Ora A. Day in Collins, Iowa.

The early part of their married life was spent on a farm in Story County.

To this union three children were born, Namely, Winifred (Mrs. Leslie Coughenour) of Maxwell and Mrs. Harriet Smits of Scranton, Iowa and a son, Lloyd Nelson, who preceded his father in death on September 1927 at the age of 17 years.

Besides being a life long member of the Methodist Church where he held the office of Treasurer and Steward, he also served on the School Board in Maxwell, Iowa.

In 1907 he entered the Produce business in Scranton with his brother-in-law, John R. Black, where he remained until 1912 when they moved back to Maxwell to make a home for his Father, after his Mother's death, but later coming back to Scranton in 1929 where he has since made his home.

He was in the produce business until 1948 when he retired.

Besides his son he was preceded in death by his Mother, Father, 3 brothers and one sister.

Those surviving besides his wife and daughters are his sister, Mrs. Alberta Cole of Centralia, Missouri, 10 grandchildren and 1X great grandchildren.
