Final Rites Held For Henry Hegland

Roland--Final rites were held in the Bergen Lutheran Church at Roland November 3 with interment in the Roland cemetery for Henry Hegland. Rev. A. E. Nelson of Roland conducted the service, and was assisted with music by Mrs. Osmund Ritland, Otto Hansen and Mrs. Hansen.

Pallbearers at the funeral service were nephews of the deceased Morris Erickson of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Lawrence Erickson of Fremont, Nebraska, Milvern Anderson of Chicago and Belford Anderson of Milwaukee, Henry Ahka and Thomas Jacobson of Roland.

Obituary

Henry Theodore Hegland, son of Michael and Caroline Hegland, was born on the family homestead one-half mile west of Roland on the 10th day of November, 1883. He attended the Roland schools and continued his education at the Lutheran Normal School at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he was a student for three years. During his stay there, he participated in school activities and was well known for his participation in band work and baseball. His interest in the sport of baseball led him to participate as a player on several teams and almost resulted in adopting baseball as a professional career. Following his school days, he traveled extensively in the middle west as a salesman for hardware merchandise.

On December 18,, 1907, he was united in marriage to Bertha Olson, also of Roland. Two children were born to them a daughter, Charlotte Sandelin, now of Burbank, California, and a son, Harold O. Hegland, now practicing law at Ames.

The first thirty year of their married life was spent in the Roland community on their farm one mile west of Roland. In 1936, they moved to Iowa City where both of the children completed work at the Iowa University. While in Iowa City, Henry was employed at the University Hospital. In 1950 he retired from active work, and he and Mrs. Hegland purchased their present home in Roland where he was residing at the time of his death.

Mr. Hegland suffered a heart attack at the Roland post office Saturday, October 30th. At the time of his death he lacked eleven days of reaching his 71st birthday. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Bertha, his daughter, Charlotte, and son Harold along with six grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, he was also survived by his brothers, Louis Hegland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Elroy Hegland and Martin Hegland of Los Angeles, California, and his sister, Clara Davis, also of Los Angeles, together with a large number of nieces and nephews and his many friends.

Relatives attending the funeral included his brother, Louis Hegland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, his niece, Lillian Goetschius and her husband Perry, also of Sioux Falls, his niece, Gladys Spafford of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Edith Anderson of Chicago; Ellen and Donna Anderson of Milwaukee, Orphie and Chester Pierson of McCallsburg, and many friends of the family from Ames and the Roland community.
