Funeral Services for Ben C. Dueland
Special to the Journal.
Slater, Jan. 3--Funeral services for Ben C. Dueland, were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Hauges Free church. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. John Leland who spoke in Norwegian and English. He was assisted by Rev. E. R. Rorem of the Bethlehem church who spoke in the English language. Mrs. Lester Nelson and Miss Lillian Sydness had charge of the many beautiful floral offerings.A male quartet composed of Olaf Austin, Donald Peterson, Dewey Pausch and Homer Lewis, sang, "In the Garden."
Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.
Ben C. Dueland was born August 25, 1866 in Olen, Norway and died at his home in Slater on Christmas day, having reached the age of 68 years and 4 months. He came to America at the age of 16, to Sheldahl, Iowa.
The family moved to Slater at the time the town was built. He was married to Miss Mary Sydness of Huxley, November 13, 1896. Six children were born to bless this union. They have always made Slater their home since moving here. He was associated in the grain business with John Nielson for over twenty years. He retired several years ago on account of his health.
He was an active church worker, a former member of a male quartette and for many years served as Sunday school superintendent. He was a kind and devoted husband and father. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and six children, all present at the services Raymond Dueland of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Lillian Elder of Cambridge, Miss Glendora Dueland of Roseau, Minn., Mrs. Myrtle McBride, Mrs. Margaret Levin and Carl Dueland of Slater, also eight grandchildren. Five sisters and one brother also survive him Mrs. Anna Coughlin of Los Angeles; Mrs. Henry Johnson and Mrs. Andrew Lane of Des Moines, Mrs. Katie Nelson of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Bertha Fronsdahl of Slater and Nels Dueland of Huxley.
Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ogland of Eagle Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Tollef Dueland and children of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Dueland of Jewell, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Charleston of Randall, Mrs. Carrie Sydness and Mrs. Ed Erickson of Ames, Mrs. and Mrs. A. V. Lane, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson and daughters, Misses Beatrice and Elizabeth of Des Moines.
