PIONEER COLLINS WOMAN IS DEAD

MRS. ELIZABETH DODD PASSED AWAY AT 8:00 A. M. TODAY

Collins, Jan. 20--Mrs. Elizabeth Dodd, 87, for nearly half a century a resident of Story county, died at her home in Collins early Friday, after an illness of several weeks.

Mrs. Dodd, widow of the late Charles E. Dodd, Civil war veteran who died in November , 1929, had lived in Iowa since 1855, when he came to Iowa with her parents Reuben and Elizabeth Kuhns from Ohio, where she was born October 23, 1846.

The family made the trip in a covered wagon and located first on a farm near Newton in Jasper county, where where she grew to womanhood.

She was married in 1865 to Charles E. Dodds, a young soldier just back from the Civil war, the marriage taking place at the early day inland village of Clyde, in Jasper county.

Thirteen children were born to this union, nine of whom grew to manhood and womanhood and seven of whom survive the parents.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Dodd remained in Jasper county for a time, but in 1884 bought and located on a farm in Story county, southeast of Collins, where they lived for over 40 years, retiring and moving into Collins in 1924.

Here Mr. Dodd died November 2, 1929 and was buried in the Collins cemetery.

Two of the grown sons, Ulysses and John, died a few years ago and the parents are now survived by the daughters Mrs. Ed Kitchell of Spooner, Wis., and Mrs. Leonard Evans of Collins. The sons are Dennis Dodd of Collins, Milo Dodd of near Fernald, Edd Dodd of Des Moines, Horace Dodd of Marshalltown and Cleveland Dodd of near Fernald.

She also leaves 37 grandchildren and 63 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Dodd had spent last winter and the early part of this winder at the Iowa Soldiers home, but after becoming ill returned to her own home here, where she had been cared for by her daughter Mrs. Kitchell.

The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the Church of Christ in Collins, of which she was a long time member. Interment will be in the local cemetery by the side of her husband.
