Beloved Woman Was Laid to Rest Late Thursday

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Edwin O. Carter of El Centro, Calif., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Addison of this city, and former Nevada teacher, were held from the Methodist Episcopal church in this city on Thursday afternoon and attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.

The services held at three o'clock, were in charge of Rev. George A. Lawton, assisted by W. O. Benthin of Central Presbyterian church. George Young, Des Moines, a member of the Shrine Chanters and former Cornell College classmate of the deceased sang, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Goin' Home." Mr. Young was accompanied by Mrs. Irma Van Osdal, organist at Grace Methodist church in Des Moines, a personal friend and P. E. O. Sister of the deceased.

A brief obituary and a beautiful tribute to the life and outstanding personality and character of the deceased was given by Rev. Lawton following prayer by Mr. Benthin.

During his sermon Rev. Lawton read two poems, "This is Dying" and "The Rose that Grew by the Garden Wall" which had been sent the bereaved families by friends who felt they embodied the wonderful fortitude and outstanding virtues which permeate th life of Mrs. Carter and spread their influence even during much pain and suffering.

The unusually large number of floral offerings, a number of which had accompanied the remains from California, were mutely expressive of the sympathy extended by friends and relatives from near and far.

The pall bearers were long time friends of the deceased. They were Joe A. Mills and Frank M. Boardman of Nevada, Ray Posten of Maxwell, Harry Wallace and Dr. Howard of Des Moines and George Rosenberg of Iowa Falls.

The following obituary was read by Rev. Lawton:

"Anna Eliza Addison was born on a farm south of Maxwell, in Washington township, Polk county, January 30, 1883 and died at her home in El Centro, Calif., Jan. 21, 1933. In March, 1888, the family moved to Maxwell. She was educated in the Maxwell school an at Cornell at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. After completing her education she taught in the Nevada schools from Sept. 1903 to 1908.

On November 5, 1908 she unite in marriage with Edwin Otis Carter at Nevada. To this union two sons were born. The two sons are Edwin Addison and James Herbert. Dr. and Mrs. Carter lived at Iowa Falls from the time of their marriage until Sept. 1917. At this time they located in Des Moines where they reside until October 1925. In 1925 the family moved to El Centro, Calif., which place remained their home until her death.

She was brought up in the Methodist church. At El Centro she united with the Presbyterian church. She was also, a member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood and other clubs. Mrs. Carter took and active part in Civic, charity and home affairs.

She leaves to mourn their loss her husband and two sons, her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Addison of Nevada, one sister Mrs. Hazel Vinsel of Nevada and a brother James E. of Des Moines. It is needless to add she leaves a very large circle of friends who will often think of her and will miss her."

Interment was in the Nevada cemetery. A brief prayer was given by Rev. Lawton at the grave at the cemetery was being covered by a blanket of snow, which started falling as the funeral cortege left the church.

Relatives in Nevada in attendance at the funeral included the following: Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Jungkunz, Freeport, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Cook, Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. Alice Woollens, Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Teachout, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Robt. Teachout, Dixon, Ill.; Mrs. Earl Kennedy, Dixon, Ill.; Mrs. Tom Loughran, Mrs. Chas. Corcoran, Geo. Corcoran, W. W. Wise, Mrs. Wm. Kimble, Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Worden, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hayes and son William, and Mrs. Bert Merrill all of Des Moines.

Among the hundreds of friends in attendance at the services were: Mrs. Milo Thornton of Des Moines; Henry Heiner of Maxwell; Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Bleeker of Ackley; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. O'Neil and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wallace of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Rosenberg of Iowa Falls; Mrs. Elmer Brownlie, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Young Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stern, Mrs. Steward Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cook, Dr. and Mrs. Claude Dickey, Mrs. A. C. Page, Mrs. Mary Holland, Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Howard, Mrs. W. J. Cameron, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Posten of Maxwell; Miss Esther Bowen and Miss Elizabeth Tiernan of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Serbein of Collins; Judge and Mrs. E. M. McCall of Fort Dodge; Mrs. Erma Van Orsdale, Mrs. Homer Clark, and many others of Des Moines, Maxwell and other places.
