Mrs. Florence Ozias Funeral Services Are Held Friday
Mary Florence Burney Ozias was born July 18, 1885, in County Armagh, North Ireland. She came with her mother that fall to Newton, Iowa to join her father, who had settled there previously. In 1896, the family moved to Collins, where she finished tenth grade, completing her high school at Hyde Park High School in Chicago. She attended the State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls for several summers and taught schools in the Collins area.
She was married to Lincoln Horace Ozias superintendent of schools at Woodward, Iowa, June 24, 1908, in her parents' home in Collins. She and her husband taught school in several communities throughout Iowa. Her husband died in 1944. Mrs. Ozias returned to Collins in 1953.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, serving as choir director, Sunday School teacher, pianist, and held a number of offices in the W.S.C.S. She was well known for her work with youth groups, and was a member of the O. E. S.
Mrs. Ozias died Tuesday, Aug. 7, enroute to the Story County Hospital, at the age of 77 years and 21 days. She had been ill for the past 12 years. She had been hospitalized several times in the last five years, since being injured in an accident. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
Survivors include one son, Loren; a step-son, Elwin Ozias of Indianola; a brother, William Burney of Iowa City; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, also of Iowa City and Miss Alice Burney of Collins; two step grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Lena Vasey.
Funeral Services
Funeral services for Florence Ozias, 77, were held Friday, Aug. 10, 1962, at 10:00 a. m. at the Collins Methodist Church with the Rev. James N. Louk, pastor, officiating, with burial at Oakdale Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Thayer Derby, organist; Mrs. Robert Schmitt and Mrs. Richard Thomas sang two duets, "Under His Wings" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd."
Flowers were cared for by Mrs. William Cochran and Mrs. Edward Smith.
Ushers were Fred Etnier and Richard Holland.
The pallbearers were Lloyd Campbell, Thayer Derby, William Hamilton, Norman Long, Delmar Sparks and P. J. Wetrich.
After the services a noon meal and lunch was served by the Loyalty Circle.
