Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Harold Birkestrand

Huxley, July 15 -- Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Harold Birkestrand. There were brief services at the home and 2 o'clock at the Fjeldberg Lutheran church, in Huxley and were in charge of Rev. O. C. Hellekson, assisted by the Rev. H. E. Jacobson of the Palestine church. There was a vocal solo sung by Mrs. Lars Kloster, sermons by Rev. Hillekson and Rev. Jacobson, and a solo by Mrs. Ed Hall.

There were many lovely floral tributes and gifts to the mission and other church activities in memory of the deceased.

The pall bearers were Irvin Nelson, Thurman Johnson, Willard Ryan, Don Birkestrand, Alexander Kloster and Ben Hokel.

Obituary

Harold Ole Sanford Birkestrand was born near Huxley, Dec. 21, 1903. His parents were Weir and Tilla Birkestrand. He grew to manhood in the home community and was confirmed on Nov. 25, 1917 by Rev. Birkelo in the Fjeldberg Lutheran church.

He was a graduate from the Huxley high school, he entered Lutheran college at Decorah. In 1926 he completed his training at Luther college receiving a scholarship. After teaching a year at Stanbeck, Minnesota, he attended the University of Michigan, receiving his master of arts degree in 1928. He then returned to Luther college as instructor for a few years. At the time of his death he was managing the Farmer's Elevator of Cambridge. He did a fine job, leaving the elevator in fine financial condition and doing a good business.

Harold's mother passed away while he was young. He leaves to mourn his departure, his father and step-mother, three half-sisters, Mrs. Martha Anderson, Mrs. Odella Crowell and Mrs. Javerna Twit, and three half-brothers, Gerhard, David and Weir, Jr. and also other relatives and friends.
