Funeral Services for Mrs. W. H. Holmes Held Tuesday

Collins, Sept. 29--Funeral services for Mrs. W. H. Holmes who passed away at her home south of Collins early on Saturday morning, Sept. 20, were held at the local Church of Christ, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Henry Esch, pastor of the church was in charge of the services.

A quartet composed of Mrs. Vance Stead, Mrs. L. D. Holland, R. A. long and Milton Hale with Mrs. C. R. Stone at the piano furnished the music. The songs used were "Abide with Me" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

The flowers were arranged at the church and grave by the Misses Belva and Iva Swalwell and Mrs. Harlan Carver.

Interment was in Evergreen cemetery with Lowell and Gale Holmes, Roland Holmes, William Oxley, grandsons and William and Henry Duesberg, close neighbors acting as pallbearers.

Obituary

The following obituary was read at the services: Minnie Augusta Bates, daughter of John A. and Miriam Bates, was born in Jasper county, Ia., on Dec. 24, 1866, and passed from this life on Sept. 20, 1947, at the age of 80 years, eight months and 26 days.

In her girlhood, the family moved to the Collins community and located on the Bates homestead, southwest of town.

She was united in marriage at Auburn, Nebr., they made their home throughout their married life in the community.

Besides her husband she is survived by her four children: Hazel Holmes and Vernon Holmes of near Collins, Ervin Holmes of Clemons and Mrs. Ila Oxley of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. O. E. Bedell of Hastings, Nebr., three brothers, Sherm Bates of near Collins, Grant Bates of near Nevada and John A. Bates of Hobart, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of more distant relatives and friends.

Among the out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral of Mrs. William Holmes Tuesday afternoon were: Mrs. Flora Warrell and Mrs. Roy Hennick of Maxwell, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bell, Newton; John E. Holmes, Mr. and Mrs. Max Holmes, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Warrell, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Oxley and Bill all of Des Moines; Grant Bates, Nevada; Roland Holmes, Corpus Chriti, Tex.; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Holmes and daughters, Maizie and Shirley, Clemons.
