Funeral Rites For Bertha Leona Carver Held Thursday

Collins, Sept. 11 -- Funeral services for the late Bertha Leona Carver of Collins, wife of Thomas H. Carver, who passed away at her home Thursday evening, Sept. 4, 1947, were held from the local Methodist church Sunday afternoon, September 7, at 2:00 p. m. Her pastor, the Rev. Aldreth V. Weigel was in charge of the services.

Three songs, "The Lord's Prayer," "Teach Me Thy Will," and "Rock of Ages" were sung as solos by Mrs. Vance Stead and she was accompanied by Mrs. C. R. Stone who was at the piano for the opening and closing music of the services.

The floral offerings were very lovely and were so numerous they fairly filled the front of the church making a floral background for the casket. They were arranged at the church and the grave by the Misses Iva and Adah Swalwell and Mrs. O. N. Serbein.

Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. The pallbearerss were Byron and Walter Keagle, Claude Ballard and Kenneth Tomlinson.

The following brief obituary was read at the services:

Bertha Leona Carver was born June 28, 1882 at Collins, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Wilbur and Mary Ann Mead. She passed away at her home in Collins, September 4, 1947. Mrs. Carver grew to young womanhood in the Collins and Zearing communities and was untied in marriage to Thomas H. Carver on January 16, 1901. The first four years of their married life was pent at Red Lake Falls, Minn., after which they returned to the Collins community, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Carver has been an active member of the Methodist church since childhood.

Surviving are his husband, Thomas H. Carver, her four children: Lowell L., of Ames, ; Harold T., of Atlantic; Ilo Marie of Collins; Mrs. Gwendolyn Rice of Collins, eight grandchildren and four sisters: Mrs. Martin cross, Mrs. Dan Wilson, Mrs. Harve Southern and Mrs. William Fitzgerald, all of Collins. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

A letter from the Rev. David Young, of Cody, Wyo., a former pastor who was unable to come to Collins for the services was read. He paid a glowing tribute to the life of the deceased and extended his sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Carver was in poor health for many years, but because of her ability to think and do for others it was no a handicap.

She was active in church circles and was faithful in her attendance until the past year. She will be missed by her family and friends bur never forgotten.

Relatives and friends were in attendance of the services from Ottawa, Ill., Ironton, Minn., Wilmar, Minn, Fort Dodge, Atlantic, Monroe, Laurel, Maxwell, Des Moines, Ames, State Center, Colo, Nevada, Fernald, Zearing, McCallsburg and Marshalltown.
