Rites for Brother of Maxwell Woman

Roy S. Huffman, 59, Jackson county, Illinois, Coroner serving his third successive term, was found dead in his bed at the Logan hotel in Murphysboro Monday afternoon Sept. 4.

Presumably he had been dead since Saturday night when he was last seen about 11:30 o'clock following an accident which he investigated with Jackson County Sheriff, Robert Wright. Death was believed due to a heart attack.

The body was taken to the Crawshaw Mortuary where Masonic rites were held Tuesday evening at 8:00 o'clock and funeral services were held in the Chapel at 2 p. m. Wednesday with the Rev. Clyde Funkhouser officiating.

Funeral services were held at the Cooper-Funeral Home at 2:00 p. m. on Friday afternoon Sept. 8 with Rev. E. S. Blomquist in charge.

The pallbearers were members of the local Masonic Lodge, namely W. G. Joor, J. E. Ward, O. F. S-----, Joe Young, Ross Allen and Bart Rogers. Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

Obituary

Roy, eldest son of the late John W. and Ida L. Huffman was born near Green Center, Iowa County, Iowa, on September 28, 1890 and had lived in southern Illinois about 23 years.

Mr. Huffman was graduated from the Maxwell High school in 1911 and from the Iowa City Academy and the Iowa State University in 1917 after which he did U. S. Geological Survey work and also worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission and later transferred to the Illinois State Highway Commission. In addition to his duties as Coroner in Jackson county, he conducted a private engineering and surveying business.

Huffman was an active participant in civic clubs and organizations. He was an active member in the following organizations: Murphysboro Masonic Lodge No. 498, A.F & A. M., Mississippi Valley Sonsistory A.A.S.R. 32 degree, East St. Louis Shriners Am---d Temple, East St. Louis Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Murphysboro B.P.O.F. Lodge 1234, Carbondale, Murphysboro Eagles, Murphysboro Moose, Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce, Greater Egypt Association, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, Illinois Coroners' Association, National Association of Coroners, First Methodist church of Murphysboro, and the Murphysboro Rotary Club.

He is survived by one sister Mrs. Blanche Glasgow of Maxwell and a host of other relatives and friends. One brother, Mark Huffman preceded him in death.
