Hold Final Rites For Paul Lura

A large host of relatives and friends attended the funeral services held Monday afternoon for Paul Lura, one of the well known citizens of Thompson community. He had lived in Thompson for 29 years and was summoned to his eternal reward on Wednesday evening, March 22nd. He was a former McCallsburg resident.

The Rev. Oliver Seim officiated at the services held in the home at 1:30 and in the Bethany Lutheran church at two o'clock. At the home Mrs. Helmer Hauan sang, "The Old Rugged Cross." Songs at the church were "God Will Take Care of You," by a quartet composed of Mrs. James Halverson, Mrs. A. J. Erickson, Art Larson and H. P. Juhl; and "Going Home", sung by Mrs. Halverson and Mrs. Erickson. Mrs. Mabel Jensen was pianist.

Interment was in the Rose Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were: Leonard Lura, Clarence Nessa, Helmer Hauan, James Halverson, Clarence Torgeson and Obert Bell.

Mr. Lura had been engaged in road work for around 25 years. His skill in this work and his determination to always do his best won him the respect of all, and his willingness to go out of his way to be of help to his fellowmen made many friends who join with the relatives and friends in mourning his loss.

Obituary

Paul Lura was born in Hardin county, Iowa on January 14, 1883. His parents were Knute and Bergetta Lura. He spent his boyhood in Hardin county. He was baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran church in his home territory.

In 1901, Paul Lura was united in marriage to Rachel Newgaard. To this union one daughter, Gladys was born. The first marriage was terminated by the death of Mrs. Lura in 1907*, after six years of married life.

In 1909, Mr. Lura married Sophia Strum who has been his companion for 40 years. To this union three children were born, one daughter and two sons.

About 1903, Paul Lura and his family moved to Mitchell, S. Dak. where he lived for five or six years.

He returned to Iowa and lived for more years in Story County. In 1921 the Lura family moved to Thompson where they lived for 29 years. They lived on a farm at first, but later Mr. Lura quit the farm and worked for the county in maintaining the roads.

Mr. Lura's health began to fail in 1947. He suffered from a heart condition, and the doctor told him to quit working. Other complications set in, and he was taken to the hospital a week ago where he passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 1950. He was 67 years of age.

Survivors

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Gladys (Mrs. H. H. E. Edwards) of Moline, Ill.; Lester Lura of Thompson, Fern (Mrs. Henry Hauan) of Thompson and DeLoss Lura of Wells, Minn. He is also survived by five grandchildren, six brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Peter of Roland, Martin of Garden City, Carl of Zearing, Arthur of Marshalltown, Otis of Nevada, Lewis of McCallsburg. The sisters are Alma (Mrs. Geo. Vallem) of Zearing, Bertha (Mrs. Ole Nessa) of Lake Mills and Olova (Mrs. Milt Hanson) of Clarkfield, Minn.
