Last Rites For L. E. Appelgate Held on Tuesday

Funeral services for Lewis Edgar Appelgate, resident of Story county for 70 years, were held from the Nevada Evangelical U. B. church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. E. R. Walter officiating. Mrs. Howard Erickson sang "The Lord's Prayer" at the close of the service accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Dale Allen.

The casket bearers were Ezra Myers, C. L. Stratton, Ora Stemler, Wilbur Myers, Wm. Schickell and Al Spivey. Burial was in the Nevada cemetery by the side of the wife who passed away in 1948.

Obituary

Lewis Edgar Appelgate, son of Joseph and Jane Appelgate, was born a King City, Mo. on Jan. 29th, 1875, and passed away at his home south of Nevada, Iowa, on Feb. 4th, 1950, at the age of 75 years and five days.

As a young man he came to Story county, Iowa and worked for a number of years as a farm laborer. He was united in marriage to Bernice Appelgate on June 11, 1900, at Albert Lea, Minn. After their marriage they established their home near Casselton, N. Dak., where they remained four years, and then moved to Story county where they lived on a farm until his passing.

To this union two children were born: Thelma Appelgate and Dorothy, Mrs. Floyd Finer, both of Nevada. Mrs. Appelgate preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 1948.

Mr. Appelgate was a quiet, unassuming man, always ready to give of himself for his family. He lived devotedly for his family, never leaving them alone for a night. He was also active in the church of his choice, serving as an usher and for many years as a trustee, only relinquishing his church activities when his health failed him.

Mr. Appelgate leaves to mourn his passing, his two daughters and one grandson, Billy West, and a host of relatives and friends.
