Hold Final Service For Lewis R. Bjelde
Last rites for Lewis Rasmus Bjelde were conducted Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 1, by Rev. H. N. Bakke from McCallsburg Bethany Lutheran church following a brief prayer service in the home.
Mrs. F. E. Nail and Miss Catherine Craig sang "No Night There" and Mrs. O. E. Ritland sand in Norwegian, "Den Store Flok Vi Se."
There were several gifts to missions and to the Bethany church building fund. The many beautiful flowers were cared for by Mrs. L. G. Ellingson and Mrs. Delmar Helland.
Serving as casket bearers were Nels Nessa and Ole Olson of Garden City, O. E. Ritland of Roland, Carroll Lura, Guy Mills and S. Holland of McCallsburg. Interment was in the Garden City cemetery.
Obituary
Lewis Rasmus Bjelde was born Dec. 1, 1862 at Sagndahlfjeren, Norway, near Bergen, the son of Rasmus and Gertrude Bjelde, and died Friday, Jan. 27, at his home in McCallsburg.
Mr. Bjelde was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of Norway.
At the age of 21 he came to the United States and lived in Minnesota for a time, where he was married to Miss Ingaborg Gulbranson. To this union three children were born, all of whom survive him.
He and his family from Little Falls, Minn. to Garden City, where Mrs. Bjelde passed away April 13, 1920.
On Oct. 10, 1925, he was married to Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Schaller, Iowa, who preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1948.
Mr. Bjelde followed the blacksmith trade until about 14 years ago when ill health forced him to retire.
Survivors
Surviving are his three children, Richard of Ventura, Calif., Mrs. Elmer (Gertrude) Newgaard and Mrs. Gaylord (Lillian) Christian of Ames; six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren; also four step-children and 10 step-grandchildren.
Since the death of Mrs. Bjelde two years ago, he has been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Newgaard, who made their home with him.
Relatives attending the services from a distance came from Schaller, Radcliffe and Sioux City.
