Vance Hakes Dies at Algona; Body Here for Burial

Funeral services for Vance A. Hakes, 53, former resident of near Nevada, who died Saturday evening, Dec. 23, at the family home near Algona, were held this afternoon at 1:30 at the Morfoot Funeral home with Rev. Jos. M. Kennedy, pastor of Central Presbyterian church in charge. Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

The services were attended by a group of relatives and old neighbors and friends that filled the funeral chapel.

The following sketch of the life of the deceased was read by the minister during the service, which was simple but impressive:

"Vance A. Hakes was the son of Addison T. and Lettie L. Hakes. He was born at Martelle, Jones county, Iowa, on August 9, 1886, he being the fourth child in a family of seven children.

"When Vance was but a small child the family moved to Pocahontas county where they engaged in farming, and where Vance attended the rural schools. In 1904 the Hakes family moved to Story county and it was, while living here, that Vance met and married Miss Kathryn Olinger. Their marriage took place in 1914 and they established their home on a farm southeast of Nevada. They lived here for five years then moved to Algona, and from Algona to Amboy, Minn., where they resided a number of years, only recently returning to Algona.

"Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hakes, and these with the wife all survive their father. They are: Mrs. Robert Caven, Amboy, Minn.; Mrs Edgar Etherington, Lake Crystal, Minn.; Harold Hakes, Clear Lake, Ia.; and Gale Hakes who resides at the parental home in Algona. Two infant granddaughters, children of the two daughters of the family, and one brother and one sister also survive. The brother is Ralph M. Hakes, and the sister is Mrs. H. C. Olinger both of near Nevada. He is survived also by his faithful and loving wife with whom the home has been shared for the past 25 years.

"Practically all of the life of Mr. Hakes was spent upon the farm. To his work as a farmer, and to his interests in his home the best of his years were given. He suffered a paralytic stroke in April, 1938, and since that time has not had good health. Death came after an acute illness of some three weeks, Saturday evening, Dec. 23, 1939, at the early age of 53 years."
