Handeland Rites Held At Immanuel In Story City Sat.

Carl Elmer Handeland, son Anna and Knudt Handeland was born March 25, 1885 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was baptized in the St. Petri Lutheran Church at Story City, Iowa by Rev. Sherven.

At an early age he moved with his parents to a farm east of Ellsworth and attended rural school there. He was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth by the Rev. J. J. Lee.

On Jan. 19, 1910 he was united in marriage to Bertha Knutson at the Salem Lutheran Church near Radcliffe by the Rev. C. H. Hjortholm. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year. To this union six children were born, three of whom with their mother survive.

The children are: Arlie, Mrs. Thelmer Swenson of Radcliffe, Kenneth of Nevada, Iowa, Lester of Spencer, Norma Knutson, Mrs. Harry Gandrup, Nevada, whom they raised since infancy. Three children, Dennis, Ethel and Virgil and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Knut Handeland and a brother and sister preceded him in death. Eight grand children and five great grandchildren survive; also two sisters, Mrs. Anton Peterson of Blue Earth, Minn. and Mrs. Tillie Waage of Albert Lea, Minn., and one brother, Eddie Handeland of Blue Earth, Minn., besides many nieces and nephews.

He farmed east of Ellsworth before moving to Story City in 1947, where he had been a painter. he became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He died suddenly about 5:00 p. m. Wednesday, April 26, 1961, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gandrup in Nevada at the age of 76 years, one month and one day.

Funeral Services

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 29, at 3 p. m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City, with burial at the Greenwood Cemetery east of Ellsworth. The Rev. Harold Masted officiated.

"Good Night and Good Morning" was sung by Chet Pearson and "My Jesus I Love Thee" by Mrs. Ben Anderson and Truman Quam.

Pall bearers were James Quam, Gaylord Jacobson, Lloyd Ritland, Orville Hetland, Clarence Danger and Goodman Olson.

A short prayer service was held in the basement of the Immanuel Lutheran Church for the family, by Rev. T. J. Alvestad, just prior to the funeral.
