Orvilla Janette Elleby, age 91, of Ames, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Northridge Village.
She was born on March 31, 1928 in Charlotte, Michigan. Orvilla was the daughter of Orville and Doris (Mason) Patterson. She graduated from Walton Township Unit High School in Olivet, Michigan in 1946. Following high school, Orvilla worked in the Classification Office at Michigan State University. While working at Michigan State, she met Hotten Elleby, a Ph.D. student and Civil Engineering instructor. The couple was united in marriage on August 24, 1962 in East Lansing, Michigan.
Orvilla and Hotten moved to Ames, Iowa in 1965, where Hotten began his career with Iowa State University. Orvilla stayed at home while Kirsten and Jamie were growing up. After Hotten passed away, Orvilla continued to be very independent and took on the role of mom and dad. She also worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center in the Hospitality Shop for twenty years.
Her faith and church were very important to Orvilla. As described by Father Paul Goodland, she was “Merry Maid, Mother Superior, and Acolyte Mom.” Orvilla was very proud of serving on the Altar Guild at St. John’s for many years. Orvilla enjoyed stitchery, baking, gardening, and creating craft projects and memory books. She was a loyal ISU fan and member of the ISU Faculty Women’s Club. Orvilla was a long-time member of St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Church where she had many roles over the years. She was also a member of P.E.O.
Orvilla is survived by her daughter, Kirsten Avraamides (Carol Andersohn) of Coon Rapids, MN; her son, James (Nancy) Elleby of Ankeny IA; grandchildren Daniel Avraamides of Minneapolis, MN, Maggie (Paul) Bundy of Urbandale, IA, and Colin Elleby of Vero Beach, FL; and cousins, Elwyn (Barb) Elgelter and Knowle (Patricia) Engelter.
She was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Doris, her husband Hotten, and cousins Pam Walker, Wendell Engelter, and Shirlyann Crandell.Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 30, 2019 at St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Church. Visitation will be held at 9:30 A.M. for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Ames Municipal Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.
