Died at his home in Nevada, 4:30 a. m., July 26, 1898, W. R. Woodward, aged 78 years, 7 months and 16 days.
Mr. Woodward was born in Washington county, Ohio, December 10, 1819. In 1844 he came to Iowa; and in Keokuk county, April 22, 1852, he was married to Margaret Hillery, who was likewise Ohio born, and who survives him. From 1857 to 1863 their home was in Minnesota near the city of Rochester. Since the later date they have been residents of Story county. For seventeen years of this quarter of a century their home was on their farm in Richland township, some five miles northeast of town. The remainder of the time, in this city. Having no children of their own, they adopted Addie Denny in her infancy and through both her maiden and married years were to her as the best of parents. Mr. Woodward's health had not been good for eight years or more and, during the past year, it has been quite uncertain. During last winter he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered; and last week Monday, while returning from down town, he at the Goodin House, suffered another stroke. He was taken home and until Thursday was a restless sufferer; but thereafter unconsciousness till the end. Through all his years of failing health and serious illness he has received the most faithful care of his devoted wife. Mr. Woodward was from early manhood a member of the Baptist Church; and for forty years one of its deacons, and honored his profession. He was a man of intelligence, a kind husband, a good neighbor, and upright citizen. He will be mourned not only by his widow and near relatives, but by acquaintances generally. The funeral services take place at the Baptist church this afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. A. C. Blackman of Ames assisted by Rev. W. D. Elwell, pastor.
