Obituary.

Died at this home in McCallsburg, Story county, Iowa, July 20, 1898, Samuel Reid, aged 59 years, 9 months and 6 days.

Samuel Reid was born Oct. 14, 1838, at Walnut Ridge, near Salem, Indiana. In the year 1850 his father removed from Indiana to Iowa, settling where Morning Sun, Louisa county, is now situated. He completed a common school education, and also spent some time in the High School, at Morning Sun, and completed a full course in Commercial College at Burlington. He was among the first to enlist from Iowa in the war of the rebellion, and went out first in the Sixth Infantry. In the engagement in southwest Missouri, he was used up and was compelled to return home on account of sickness. Later he enlisted again in the 8th Cavalry, and continued in the service until the end of the war. After returning from a soldier life, he engaged in mercantile life in Morning Sun, where he remained for ten or more years. Sept. 18th, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Tressie McConnell of Morning sun, who, with two sons, their only children, Oscar and Howard, now in business in McCallsburg, remains to mourn his loss. In the year 1875 or 6 he was happily converted in a revival meeting held in the Methodist church, and soon after united with the same church and lived a consistent, active christian life. His health, which was impaired during his soldier life, failing him, he closed his business in Morning Sun, and for four years lived in Waco, Texas. He returned to Iowa, and located at Nevada, where he remained several years, and 12 years ago removed to McCallsburg, where he has since made his home, and continued his business life. This spring his health seemed much improved and he was able to do more work than a number of years. It was not till within two months past that he began to fail and bout the first of the month matters became rather serious, but he did not take his bed until July 8th. After that he was never up and about. His life closed remarkably peacefully. He was buried Friday from the Lutheran church in McCallsburg, Rev. Henderson of Nevada conducting the services, and was interred in the cemetery at Zearing. Of three brothers and two sister who survive him only one was able to be present, Rev. Isaiah Reid of Des Moines.

Mr. Reid was a man of wide intelligence and active sympathy with all measures tending to promote the best interests of the public. He kept himself well informed on current topics and was fearless in the expression of opinion as ow what tendencies in public thought and action should be encouraged and what discouraged. He was a thorough temperance man in principle and practice, and an uncompromising opponent of the liquor traffic wherever and whenever manifested. He held positions of trust, official and otherwise, and was justice of the peace at the time of his death. He was a good citizen and the community in which he lived had in him an elevating force. For several years of his residence in McCallsburg he has been on of our valued and faithful correspondents, and his death comet to the REPRESENTATIVE as a personal loss. His bereaved family have the sympathy of a multitude of friends, and the added consolation that "he died as he lived, a firm possessor of christian life, and is lamented by all who knew him." To the many kind friends who gave their sympathy and help during the sickness and death of their dear husband and father, Mrs. Reid and sons, desire to express heartfelt thanks.
