The following obituary was read by the minister during the service:

Edgar William Chance, the youngest son and child of Amy and Zachary Chance was born at Tiskawa, Illinois, February 9th, 1870 and passed from this earthly life on Wednesday, May 26th, 1943, at 7:00 o'clock a. m., at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 17 days. Death came suddenly and peacefully due to a serious gas and heart attack. His wife, Clara, and the attending physician were at his bedside when death came.

In 1871 the Chance family moved from Illinois to Tama county, Iowa, near Toledo, Iowa, as pioneer farmers. After a few years residence here they moved to the Illinois Grove neighborhood in Marshall county, where Ed spent his early childhood days on a farm. In 18895 the family move to Ames. It was here the children grew to young womanhood and manhood.

In 1892 Edgar William Chance was united in marriage to Myrtle Van Patter. To this union were born 5 sons, all living they being Emmett, Howard, Donald, Marion and Eldon. For the first few years of wedded life the family live on a farm near Ames, and in 1900 located permanently on a farm near Zearing.

In October, 1934 Myrtle Chance passed from this earthly life and Ed left the farm to reside in town the remaining years of his life. For the past several years the deceased had been plagued with intermittent illness, culminating in a serious illness the past winter. Recovery seemed imminent, and on January 17, 1943 he was united in marriage to Clara Waldie of Zearing. This happy union was abruptly ended as death summoned.

Apparently enjoying life to its fullest, Ed told one of his sons a few weeks before the end came: "Life seems so wonderful this spring after my long illness--I would never have lived had it not been for the loving and devoted care given me by Clara.

Practically all of Ed's life was spent on the farm--a place he really loved. His happiness was largely achieved in doing a good job tilling the soil and doing work connected with the farm. He was deeply devoted to his family in a silent yet unyielding manner. The last few years of his life were marked by intermittent but silent suffering illnesses.

The passing of a love one leaves, besides his wife, the following close family survivors: sons Emmett, Donald and Elson of Zearing; Howard, of Ashland, Ohio, and Marion of Liscomb. He also leaves his granddaughter Marianne, grandsons, Richard, Harold, Michael, Eddie and Russell; a sister, Mrs. M. C.
