Mrs. Gates Was Laid to Rest Today

A brief prayer service for Marilla Jane Sates, 82, who died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mary Alderman in Nevada early Tuesday was held at the Morfoot Funeral home at 1:00 a. m. today, by Rev. L. T. Olson of the Evangelical church. After this service the funeral ---- drove to Gifford where the funeral was conducted at the Methodist church by Rev. Charles Pickford of Nevada after which interment was in the Shepherd cemetery between Gifford and Union.

The following obituary of the deceased was read at the service.

Marilia Jane Gates was born May 20, 1850 in Stephenson county, Illinois and died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mary Alderman, Nevada, Ia. April 21, 1931 aged 82 years.

She was united in marriage to Norman Justice Gates in the year 1868 in Stephenson Co., Ill. The husband died at their home in Giffor in 1903. The family removed to Iowa many years since and lived near McCallsburg for some years and later near Zearing, finally locating at Gifford where the husband died, and where the deceased continued to reside until about four years ago, when she came to Nevada to live at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alderman.

She was the mother of eight children, three sons and five daughters, three of the latter having preceded her in death some years.

She leaves two daughters, Mary A. Alderman and Sadie Frosell both of Nevada, and three sons, Fred Gates of Marshalltown, and Earl and Martin Gates of Ames. Also twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren, besides many friends throughout Story and Hardin counties.

She became a Christian soon after removing to Story county and united with the Zearing Evangelical church some forty-two years ago, and was a faithful attendant at church services where she lived so long as her health and strength permitted the same. Her love for her Saviour was always first in her heart and life we are told and her last words were an audible prayer as she passed on out of this life.

She was a kind and loving mother to her family, who hold her life in loving remembrance, as well as many of her former neighbors and other friends.
