OBITUARY OF MRS. PIERCE.
Eldest of 16 Children and First to Pass Away.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gilbert Pierce, whose death at the University hospital at Iowa City occurred at an early hour Monday morning, were held Wednesday forenoon at the Latterday Saints church, the sermon being preached by Rev. Mussell of Des Moines. Interment was in the Nevada cemetery.
The death of Mrs. Pierce is particularly sad in that she, the eldest of a family of sixteen children, leaves six little ones in the home of husband, without the care of a mother to guide and care for them. The eldest of these little ones is 11 years.
Mrs. Pierce had been taken to the University hospital a week before and had submitted to an operation the latter part of the week. On Sunday morning a message was received here saying that her condition was serious and her husband, with her brother, Blaine Corbin and two of her sisters left for Iowa City and were with her when the end came. The operation was for gallstones and death resulted from a hemmorhage which followed.
Mrs. Pierce was born Clara Corbin, eldest of the sixteen children of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Corbin and the first to be called by death. The father died August 23, 1909 but the mother, nine sisters and six brothers are still living.
She was born on a farm northeast of Nevada February 14, 1887. Her marriage to Gilbert Pierce took place June 2, 1909 and to this union were born 6 children all of whom, with the husband are left to mourn her untimely death.
She leaves to mourn her death besides her husband and little ones, her mother, the nine sisters, 6 brothers an aged grandmother and many other relatives and friends.
All member of the immediate family were present at the funeral with the exception of one brother and two sisters. One brother, Hugh, is in Honolulu another sister, Mrs. Roy Tucker, was on her way on an overland trip to Indiana and could not be located and another sister, Mrs. Albert Davidson, lives in Indiana and unable to be here.
The body was brought back from Iowa City Monday evening and was taken to the home of her mother Mrs. Corbin where it was kept until time for the funeral.
Mrs. Pierce had been a member of the Re-organized church of Jesus Christ and continued faithful in this belief to the last. She was a devoted wife and mother and was woman who was admired by those who knew her best.
The husband and little ones, as well as the other members of her immediate family will receive the very profound sympathy of the people of the community in their hours of great sorrow.
