Funeral Services Held Here Today for Mrs. Gene Barker
Funeral rites for Mrs. Ella Jane Barker, 84, widow of the later Eugene Barker, who died very suddenly at her home south of Nevada Tuesday morning, were held this afternoon at the Morfoot Funeral home, with Rev. O. E. Cooley of the Nevada Methodist church in charge. Mrs. Beulah Freeland sang "In the Garden," while Mrs. Dobson was at the organ.
The chapel of the home was well filled with relatives and old neighbors and friends. Burial was in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery by the side of her husband who passed away in 1926.
The floral offerings were very beautiful.
The following obituary was read by the minister.
"Ella Jane, daughter of David R. and Huldah Chase, was born at Rock Elm, in Pierce Co., Wisconsin, Oct. 2, 1859. Her death occurred on January 25, 1944. Having reached the age of 84 years, 3 mo. and 23 days, Ella Jane was the third child of a family of five, two sons and three daughters. A son, Warren, died in infancy. The other brother and sisters also preceded her in death.
"Her father joined the Union Army during the Civil War, served under General Sherman, and was killed in 1865, Feb. 2, the battle occurring in South Carolina. her mother married again, moved to Nevaa, 1868, making the trip by ox team over the prairie. Ella attended school in Nevada for a few years and later received teachers training at Cedar Falls. She taught school for sixteen terms, most of her teaching being around Nevada and Cambridge, also teaching in Nebraska.
Her second marriage was to Eugene Barker of near Nevada.* To this union were born Cora Huff of Story City, Jessie Warfield of Maxwell, Glenn of Hazleton, Earl of Cambridge, and Effie Johnson of Nevada.
"In early life she became a member of the Methodist Church and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School at the old Jefferson Church.
"Mrs. Barker suffered a heart attack in July and since that time she has been a very poor health. She was prepared for death, having many times expressed her faith in her Saviour.
"Since the death of her husband on Aug. 6, 1926, she has made her home with her son Earl, where everything possible was done to make life pleasant for her.
"She leaves to mourn her death, her five children, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
"Mrs. Barker was a true and devoted mother, placing the interests of the home always first. She loved flowers and spent much of her time in caring for them. She lived to a ripe old age, and well deserves the rest which we believe she now enjoys with her Lord and Saviour."
