Funeral Series Held at Huxley for Mrs. Knut Ryan
Special to the Journal:
Huxley, June 23--Funeral series fro Mrs. Knut Ryan were held at the Palestine church at two o'clock Monday afternoon following a prayer service at the hom at 1:30. The services were in charge of her pastor Rev. Buland and he was assisted by Rev. Rorem of Slater and Rev. H------ of Minneapolis. Irene Beth--- sand a solo "Going Hom" after which Rev. Bulan had scripture reasing. The R-- quartet from S---- sang one number " - --- Beautiful Land.:Rev. Buland --- addressed the -- -- ---- -- text from the ----- - of Paul ep---- --- Phillipians 23rd verse "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better." Rev. Rorem then delivered a ----------. He had ------- ---- --- kind lady and ---- on her often during her illness when she stayed at the Charley Ryan home. Rev. Holman then spoke briefly after which Walter Christopher sang a favorite hymn, "Der Store Hvide Flok V Se."
There were many beautiful floral offerings as well as gifts to the missions in her memory from relatives, friends, the Lincoln Ladies Aid and the North Palestine Aid societies. Six grandsons served as pallbearers: Orville Elliott, Edward, Milford, Irving, Bobby and Elwood Ryan. The following obituary was read:
Olena Eide was born in Olen, Norway, June 1, 1849. She was baptized and confirmed there and came to this country in 1874 and spent about 21 years in Illinois. She was married to Knut Ryan Feb. 24, 1874 and they joined the Palestine congregation soon after arriving here. She was a faithful member of the North Ladies Aid society for many years while she was able to take active part. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were blessed with ten children, four having passed away. The six who survive their parents are Erick K. Ryan of Eagle Grove, Charley Ryan of Slater, Nuty Ryan of near Kelley, Mrs. Annie Berhow, Mrs. Nellie Elliott and Oley Ryan of Huxley and one step-son, Tom Ryan of Dwight, Ill. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Ryan was in failing health for several years and during that time her children cared for her with all diligence. She passe away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Seward Berhow June 15, 1938 at the age of 89 years and 14 days.
The remains were laid to rest in the Palestine cemetery beside her husband who died October 15, 1920.
Among those from a distance who were here for the funeral were Mrs. Lars Larson of Callendar, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Severson of Clear Lake, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Ryan, Tommy and Robert, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Osmund and daughter of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Minde and Mrs. Thompson of Roland, Mrs. Gandrup and Mrs. Lewie Olson of Story City, E. B. Thompson, Evely, Helen and Grace from Rolfe, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ryan and Patricia from Jewell and a large number from Slater.
