Holger Birkeland.
Holger Birkeland was born at Imsland Stavanger, Norway on November 18, 1835 and died at his home south of Roland on January 3, 1922, at 8:00 p. m., being at the time of death, eighty-six years, one month, and sixteen days. Mr. Birkeland emigrated to the United States in June 1866. In the fall of the same year he was united in marriage to Borgilla Birkeland. To this union nine children were born, two died in infancy and a son Oscar died in November 1893 at the age of fifteen years. The surviving children are Mrs. K. J. Jacobson, of Dallas, Wis., Osmund, Bernard, Betsey and Henry Birkeland all living near Roland and Mrs. H. O. Bakken of Luverne, Minn. Besides the children he is survived by fourteen grandchildren and eight great grand children. His wife preceded him in death on June 22, 1900.
With the exception of three years residence on a farm three and a half mils southwest of Roland. Mr. Birkeland lived at the present family home four miles south of Roland continuously for period of about fifty three years.
Mr. Birkeland was loved and honored by all who knew him and he will be missed by his friends and neighbors.
The funeral services were held from Bergen's church at Roland on Saturday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Sumstad. He was laid to rest in the Roland cemetery.
All of the children were present at the funeral, Osmund Rortvedt of Hil-s, Minn., a nephew of the deceased was also present.
