MENZEL GAVE HIS LIFE IN SERVICE

McCALLSBURG FRIENDS MOURN LOSS OF VALUED CITIZEN

McCallsburg, Feb. 29--The funeral of Frank F. Menzel, member of the Story county board of supervisors, who died February 22 after a long illness, was held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, which was filled to capacity, even the class rooms and study being filled.

Many friends from over the county were present to pay their final earthly tribute of respect to one who practically gave his life for their interests. Had he taken the warning of his physician an given up his work months before, he probably would still be alive. But, he was always anxious to serve.

Frank F. Menzel was born at Freeport, Ill., April 22, 1863 and died at his home in McCallsburg, Feb. 22, 1928 at the age of 64 years. Frank with his parents, Charles and Amelia came to Story county in 1870 and has since resided here.

On Feb. 1, 1887 he was united in marriage to Minnie Johnson of this place who died July 30, 1902. To this union seven children were born, one having died in infancy. The six who are left to mourn the loss of a devoted father are Mrs. Pearl Tett and Miss Ruth Menzel of McCallsburg, Ray of Nevada, Mrs. Leila Boelk of Fernald, Mrs. Grace Fincham of Johnsons Grove and Fred of Los Angeles, Calif. There are six grandchildren, one brother Charles of this place and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Bakka of McCallsburg, Mrs. Tena Irvine of Zearing and Mrs. Amelia Dayton of Nevada.

Mr. Menzel lived on a farm south east of town until 1921 when he and his daughter Ruth moved to McCallsburg where they have since made their home. Mr. Menzel was devoted to his children and their welfare was his chief concern and the children were devoted to their father and will be greatly missed by them, especially the daughter Ruth who has been his housekeeper these many years.

Mr. Menzel professed faith in Christ and united with the Johnson Grove M. E. church in 1910, and was a member of the church at the time of his death. He was a member of Pilgrim Sunday school class of the Presbyterian church here.

Mr. Menzel was interested in all the community activities. While on the farm he was a school director, township trustee and sine 1921 has been a county supervisor. He was a director of the McCallsburg State bank and for years was a director of the farmers grain board. So he is well known throughout the county. He was honest in his business dealings and his county work, struck for what he considered the right thing. The funeral was in charge of Rev. J. R. Browne who has been quite close to Mr. Menzel during his sickness. The music was furnished by a quartette Mrs. F. E. Nail, Miss Catherine Craig, Peter Egenes and A. G. Graves who sang one song "Abide With Me," at the house and three at the church "Does Jesus Care," "Sweet Bye and Bye" and "We'll Never Say Goodbye in Heaven." The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The county officers sent a beautiful piece and the school here and several other organizations showing the high respect in which the deceased was held. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. E. O. Dillin and Mrs. A. G. Graves.

The pall bearers were all nephews Earl and Lester Menzel of this place, F. H. Menzel of Milford twp., Willie Irvine of Blue Earth, Minn., Charles Irvine of St. Anthony and Charles Irvine of Zearing. The children were all present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Fincham who was ill. The brothers and sisters were all present as well as several other relatives and a host of friends. There were quite a number of the county officers and friends from Nevada.

Burial was made in the family lot at Nevada.

The children are extended the sincere sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
