Obituary of Son Of Pioneer Family

James Charles, eldest son of J. Ward and Martha Dunahoo McCord was born near Iowa Center, Jan. 20, 1880 and passed away at his home north of Collins, Feb. 21, 1928, aged 48 years, 1 month and 1 day.

Childhood friends loved him, the developing youth gained respect and the man became a leader.

He attended the Collins public school and retained his interest in its growth as an institution for the better and bigger welfare of future generations to the present relationship of school director and active member of the Parent-Teachers Association.

In his early teens his praying mother led him to and witnessed his new birth in Christ. He joined the United Brethren in Christ at Dalton and soon proved his willingness to invest time, talent, strength and substance in the promotion of the kingdom on earth, remaining as long as there was an active membership, then he affiliated with the Evangelical church at Colo.

On March 5, 1902 he wedded Miss Hattie Williams and together they erected a home that has stood a monument to the gospel of Christ in the community.

Three sons have treasured birth to these parents: Oklie Virgil, Verle Bernard, Everett Envia. The angel of death claimed their first born in infancy.

His father residing at Collins; two brothers Leo S. of Waukegan, Ill., Clyde, near Collins; two sisters, Mrs. Dolly Brouhard, near Collins; Mrs. Olive Shickell near Nevada with associated families grieve the loss that is Heaven's gain.

His years have been spent midst life long scenes with the exception of two years residence at Bancroft, Iowa.

Another's need compelled him to be a friend. A possession of secret joy in living for others made him a pattern to all. The wife and sons feel deeply the breaking of the family circle but with the knowledge of an abundant life, well spent.

Expressions of love, in flowers were many and beautiful and large crowd of sorrowing friends awaited the services held at the Church of Christ in Collins, Feb. 23.

V. K. Stephens-Schierholz of the United Brethren officiated, assisted by P. E. Miller and M. C. Miller of the Evangelical church and L. O. Jones of the United Brethren.

Music was provided by a quartette composed of M. S. Aplegate, Mary Holmes, Zola Killey, Tom Huntrod, accompanied at the piano by Mildred Bence Ozmun.

Interment was made at Evergreen Hill Cemetery at Collins.
