DEAN OF COUNTY MEDICS PASSED IN DR. TEMPLETON

HAD PRACTICED IN AMES SINCE 1877--OLDEST PHYSICIAN IN COUNTY

The dean of the Story county medical profession passed on recently at Ames, in the death of Dr. H. M. Templeton, 78, for nearly a half century a practicing physician of the county, according to his longtime friend, Dr. F. S. Smith of this city, who attended his funeral Sunday.

In speaking of Dr. Templeton there was a tone of tenderness in the voice of Dr. Smith as he paid to him a fine tribute as a man and a practitioner. The two men had worked together side by side for many years and the warmest of friendships had grown up between them.

Dr. Templeton graduated from a medical school in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1877 and came at once back to Story county to enter into practice.

It was five years later that Dr. Smith graduated from the Rush Medical college, of Chicago, and three years later, or in 1885, he located in Nevada, where he has since practiced.

The death of Dr. Templeton leaves Dr. Peter Joor of Maxwell, the dean of the profession in the county, according to Dr. Smith. Dr. Joor, a native of Story county, had established himself in practice in Maxwell before the coming of Dr. Smith to Nevada.

The funeral services for Dr. Templeton were held Sunday at the Congregational church in Ames, the sermon being preached by Dr. R. M. Shipman of the Methodist church, in the absence from the city of Congregational minister.

Dr. Templeton died at his home in Ames Thursday from a stroke of apoplexy. He was in apparently good health until a few hours before his death. Mrs. Templeton said that he became troubled with indigestion a short time after returning home from a ride with friends. When he did not return from upstairs, she went to investigate and found him lying on the floor.

Medical aid was summoned immediately, but it is believed his death came instantly.

Dr. Templeton was born in Ohio in 1848 and came to Iowa with his parents about 1856 to reside in a farm three and one-half miles south of town. He left Iowa to attend the Louisville, Ky., medical college where he graduated and returned to practice medicine at Ontario before coming to Ames.

Dr. Templeton is survived by his wife*, two sons, Earl Templeton of Anamosa, and Harry Templeton of San Bernardino, Cal.; a daughter, Mrs. John Bates of Ames; a brother, William Templeton of Ames; and a sister, Miss Ella Templeton, who made her home with her brother.

Two other brothers, Milton Templeton and Prosper J. Templeton, have died within the last two years, the former in July, 1925, and the latter last fall. A sister, Mrs. Henrietta T. Hill, is also deceased.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Dr. Henry M. Templeton married twice. He married (1) Edna Granger on 24 March 1880 in Marion, Linn County, Iowa. Edna (Granger) Templeton died on 30 January 1912 and Dr. Templeton remarried (2) Lillian Ayers on 6 July 1914 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.
