SARAH MEAD DEAD; FUNERAL TODAY

PIONEER OF COLLINS NEIGHBORHOOD DIED FROM EFFECTS OF STROKE

Collins, May 12--Mrs. Sarah Mead, 81, died at her home here Saturday evening from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy.

The funeral services were held this afternoon at the United Brethren church, with Rev. F. A. Fisher in charge, after which interment took place in the Collins cemetery under the ritualistic ceremonies of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mead, a pioneer in this part of Iowa, where she had lived since 1857 was born in Huron county, Ohio, November 4, 1848, a daughter of Wilson and Mary Fish. She was nine years of age when the family came to Iowa and located in the old Peoria neighborhood, southwest of Collins.

She was first married to G. T. Mansfield and to this union six children were born. One son, Guy, died at the age of six, and the others are Perry Mansfield of Nicholas, Wis., Mrs. Mary Gilson of Laurel, Ernest Mansfield of Chicago, Leo M. Mansfield of Marshall, Minn., and Roy M. Mansfield of Des Moines.

Some time following the death of Mr. Mansfield, or on August 3, 1886, she was again married, this time to Frank M. Mead, and to them three children were born they are Fred Mead of Collins, Mrs. Edna Halterman of Des Moines and Lynn Mead of Cambridge.

Besides the children she leaves one sister, Miss Etta Fish of Collins; two half sister, Mrs. Lew Watson of Rhodes and Mrs. Minerva Scott of Nebraska; two half brothers, Frank and Walter Fish of Cambridge, a step sister, Mrs. Amanda Richmond of Rhodes and a step-brother William Beard of Rhodes.

Mrs. Mead was one of the oldest and most beloved women of the Collins neighborhood and the news of her death, even at the advanced age, came as a shock to the community.
