Story City Man Hospitalized, Two Men Killed in Marshall County Auto Crash

MARSHALLTOWN (INS) -- Two men were kille and three other persons injured when a semi-truck loaded with plywood collided with a car six and one-half miles west of Marshlltown on U. S. highway 30 about midnight Saturday.

Dead were Arnold Christianson, 24, of Stanhope, driver of the car, and Jasper Overland Jr., 23, of Jewell, a companion.

Marshall County Sheriff Harry W. Jennings said the car and truck apparently sideswiped on the highway, about three-tenths of a mile west of its junction with highway 64.

Only one of the injured, Irving Thorson, 21, of Story City, a passenger in the car, was hospitalized. Hospital attendants at Marshalltown reported he suffered or chest injuries. Another source reported he had a broken arm.

Thorsen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Thorsen of Randall.

Treated at the hospital for minor injuries and then released were the driver of the truck, Harold E. Gaster, of Webster City, and Tilford Tieg, 23, of Stanhope, a fourth passenger in the car.

The truck hurtled 150 feet down the highway following the collision and the load of plywood shifted forward, stripping the cab and engine off the front of the tractor, Jennings said.

Wheels Torn Off

The dual wheels of the truck were torn off when it finally came to a halt in a nearby ditch,, he said, and the load was strewn over the roadside.

The four men were on their way to Marshalltown from Story City, Teig told highway patrolman.
