Helen R. Bobo

Memorial services for Helen R. Bobo were held Friday, February 13, 1976 in the Memorial Lutheran Church, Nevada, Iowa of which she was an active member throughout her life.

Pastor Wayne Hanson officiated at the services assisted by Lorraine Berka, a close friend.

Helen R. Bobo was born to John W. Bob and Jennie Smay Bobo, November 17, 1899. She passed away February 11, 1976 in Story County Hospital after brief illness.

Miss Bobo was graduated from Nevada High School in 1917, from Carthage College, Carthate, Ill. in 1921 and earned her masters degree in education at the University of Chicago in 1925.

Later she attended the University of Iowa and George Warren Brown, School of Social Work, in St. Louis, Missouri. From this time on her career was devoted to social work.

In 1942, she became a Red Cross worker in the war effort and served in Arkansas and Texas before going overseas to Australia and New Guinea.

On her return to Nevada in 1951 she became Social Welfare Director of Story County until her retirement in 1966. After her retirement she was active as a Red Cross volunteer, member of the Community Service Guild and various church organizations.

Helen also enjoyed membership in Hobby Club, Garden Club, P.E.O., Soroptimist Club, and many other activities. Her life was devoted to helping others.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived by one sister, Mary B. Ireland; one nephew, Douglas B. Ireland, has wife Sheryl and two children, Lynn and Scott; one niece, Helen A. Ireland and an aunt, Jessie Bobo.

Miss Bobo's body was willed to the University of Iowa for scientific research.
