OBITURARY

J. C. ULUM

John C. Ulum, prominent in this community for many years in numerous ways and particularly upon all Grand Army occasions, died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. W. Frey near Patterson in Madison county. His daughter and her husband are expected here with the body tonight, and the funeral will be conducted Wednesday at two o'clock from the Methodist church.

Mr. Ulum was a native of Licking county, Ohio, where he was born on or about April 2, 1845 and at his death he was accordingly approaching the age of 71 years. He came as a youth to Johnson county, Iowa, and there he and his three brothers enlisted in the 22nd Iowa Infantry. One of his brothers died in the service; bu the remaining three returned, and the two besides himself now survive him, Luther in Keokuk county and William at Perry. Mr. Ulum returned to Ohio for his bride and was there married sometime after the war to Helen M. Horton. They established their home near Solon in Johnson county and there resided something over 25 years, removing to Nevada about 1893 and purchasing here the property which he years later sold for the Adventist headquarters. In this home they lived until Mrs. Ulum's death about 1905, since which event he has had his home for the most part with his children, dividing his time between the home of his son, Grant, which until a year or so ago was at Nevada and that of his daughter, Mrs. Frey, which for a considerable time has been at Patterson. Three or four years ago he had a stroke of paralysis, which disabled him for a time but from that stroke he gradually recovered. A few weeks ago he had another stroke, which was more severe, and his death was no surprise to his family. He is survived by his two children Grant Ulum of Clear Lake and Mrs. Lulu Frey of Patterson, and their families and by his two brothers above noted. Mrs. Alexander Dunahugh, who lived and died here years ago was a sister.

Mr. Ulum was a man of considerable force and of much interest in what was going on. He served in the city council of Nevada and was habitually around when anything was happening of especial interest to the old soldiers. He was a good citizen and much esteemed. His death makes a break in the roll of Ferguson Post, G. A. R., the first in more than three years, and he will be be attended to his last resting place by the comrades he loved so well. His son Grant arrived last night for the funeral, and the daughter and her husband are expected as noted.
