MAXWELL NEWS ITEMS

James H. Kirk passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hoffman where he had lived for several years just east of Maxwell, Friday, Feb. 13, at an advanced age. He was born in Kentucky, August 3, 1832 and died as stated. He was an old soldier, enlisting in an Illinois regiment. He came to Iowa the first time in 1857 residing here till his enlistment. After the war he came back again and settled over near Cambridge on a farm and remained there till he came to Maxwell a few years ago. He had been afflicted for some time. He was twice married. First to Miss Sarah Foy and three children were born to this union, Mrs. Ida Bartlett of Ordaway, Colo.; Mrs. Minnie Robinson of Rock Island, Ill., and Will who died some years ago. After the death of first wife he was again united in marriage to Elizabeth Warren and to this union were born nine children, Charles of Collins; Bert of Maxwell; Edward of Orland, Cal.; Frank of Nevada; Carl of Storm Lake; Mrs. Lulu Henderson and Mrs. Ida Elliott of Cambridge and Bessie are Carrie who preceded the father in death, as did also his wife and mother. The funeral was held Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Maxwell Methodist church, Rev. H. G. Hicks, a former pastor and old time friend officiated, assisted by Rev. H. P. Young, pastor of the church. Interment was in the Center Grove cemetery. Mr. Kirk was well and favorably known and was always a much respected citizen. He was a member of the Methodist church at Cambridge.
