Jewell Services Pending Release of Crash Victim's Husband From Hospital

Story City, Dec. 2--Funeral services for Mrs. Wilmer Jewell who was killed in automobile accident north of here Sunday night, were still pending here today awaiting the release of Mr. Jewell from Mary Greeley hospital in Ames.

Mr. Jewell, who suffered a rib injury near his collar bone, was hospitalized following the head-on collision on Highway 69 just north of the Story-Hamilton county line along with his daughter Nancy, 8. Both are getting along as well as expected and the father is expected to be released either tomorrow or Thursday.

The youngest of the eight Jewell children injured in the crash, Anna 1, received serious cuts about the mouth. She and six of her seven brothers and sisters are at present staying at the home of their father's sister, Mrs. Clark Sampson, in Ames.

No report as to the condition of Mr. and Mrs. Arlon Nessa and their daughter, Sharon, of Garden City was available today but none of the three has been hospitalized.

Visiting Cousin

The Jewell family had reportedly been visiting Sunday at the home Mrs. Jewell's cousin, Jack Barkema, at Jewill and were returning home when the accident occurred. Their car was heading south on the straight highway stretch and Nessa was driving north. The Jewell car was almost a total wreck. According to patrolmen Nessa was trying to pass a car when the two machines collided head-on.

Mrs. Jewell, 35, was born on a farm west of Story City and lived her entire life in this community. She graduated from Story City high school and taught rural school near here for several years before her marriage.

She is survived by her husband and eight children, ranging from ages 1 to 12; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rang Haugland, Story City, two brothers, Arnold, Roland, and Orvie, Story City, and one sister, Mrs. Orville Madson, Story City.

Capacity Attendance Present at Funeral For Mrs. Wilmer Jewell

Story City, Dec. 10--The Immanuel Lutheran church in Story City was filled to capacity last Friday afternoon by relatives and friends who had come to attend the last rites of Mrs. Wilmer Jewell, the victim of an automobile accident on Sunday evening, Nov. 30, in which the entire family, her husband and their eight children, sustained injuries.

A family prayer service in the Henderson funeral home preceded the church service where two special duet numbers, "God Will Take Care of You" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," were sung by Mrs. Benjamin Anderson and Mrs. Arvie Jacobson, Floral offerings and gifts of money were given in memory of the deceased.

Serving as casket bearers were Herschel Williams, Sheldon William, Holgar Hoffman, Andrew Abrahamson, G. H. Kirby and William Starkey. The Rev. T. T. Heimarck, officiating pastor, read the following obituary:

Julia Alletta Haugland, daughter of Rangvold and Anna Haugland, was born July 11, 1911 in Lafayette township and died in Story City, Nov. 30, 1947, at the age of 36 years, four months and 19 days.

After having graduated from Story City high school in 1929 she taught rural school successfully for three years. In 1934 she married Wilmer Jewell and they have lived most of their married life in the Story City community.

Tho this union were born eight children, Charles, Carroll, Nancy, Jerry, Don, Doris, James and Anna.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Birdella, and her twin brother, Herald.

Those who survive her passing besides her husband and eight children are her parents, two brothers, Arnold of Roland, Iowa, and Orvie of Story City, and a sister, Mrs. Orville Madson of Story City.

Mrs. Jewell was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and at her death she was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church in Story City.

She was an affectionate daughter and sister, a devoted wife and loving mother, and she will be greatly missed in her home and by her many relatives and friends.
