FORMER RHODES WOMAN KILLED

MRS. N. F. PIFER MED WITH TRAGIC DEATH AT GRADE CROSSING

Special to the Journal.
Rhodes, Oct. 6--Mrs. N. F. Pifer, 46, wife of a former pastor here, who was killed in a grade crossing accident near Ferguson Friday afternoon was buried in the cemetery at Gilman today, after funeral services held at the Congregational church at Gilman. Service has been held in the Congregational church at Vancleve, where her husband is pastor, earlier in the day.

Mrs. Fifer [sic] was instantly killed when a sedan, in which she and her husband, pastor of the Congregational church at Vancleve, were riding, was struck by eastbound Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul passenger train No. 4, at the grade crossing west of Ferguson on highway No. 14.

Rev. Mr. Pifer, who was driving suffered only scratches and bruises although the machine was totally demolished. The car was almost at a standstill when struck by the train, Mr. Pifer believes and tracks show that the wheels were slid for a distance of eighty-eight feet.

The Pifer car was going south on the highway, which slopes down as it approaches the crossing. The train also was going down grade, but the engineer was able to bring it to a halt within two lengths after the accident.

Raymond Stubbs, who was shocking corn two hundred yards from the crossing, was a witness of the tragedy and was the first person to reach the victims of the accident. Mrs. Pifer was found lying crushed on the track while Mr. Pifer was sitting on the bank near the track. A doctor from Gilman was summoned and the body of Mrs. Pifer was taken into Ferguson.
