ROLAND ROCKETS

O. C. Langland one of the most prominent citizens of Story county died at his home southwest of Roland last Thursday evening of cancer, a disease from which he had suffered for two years. As a public and private citizen he was recognized as a man who always performed his duty creditably to himself and satisfactorily to those associated with him. He leaves a large estate every dollar of which was accumulated by hard and honest toil, by thrift and industry. His home farm is one the best improved in the township, consisting of 320 acres. He served as a soldier in the civil war, for a period of three years, entering the service while a citizen of Illinois. It was remarked by one of his comrades the other day that Langland was one of the bet in the company. While serving his country he suffered from sickness brought on by exposure resulting in partial deafness. For this he was granted a pension of $10 per month and back pension and it was later increased to $12 per month. The sad part of his history is that his last years were years of trials and troubles that were of a character that would only tend, it would seem, to crush the strongest heart. But during all this no one ever heard O. C. Langland complain, no one ever heard him upbraid or malign those who were persecuting him. His troubles though great were locked in his own breast and kept there. Such a character is worthy of commendation and emulation. We write of O. C. Langland as his nearest neighbor, and feel that we know him as he knew himself. The highest compliment that can be paid to a man is by those that knew him best, and in him all join and say "one of our best citizens has passed away, our most esteemed neighbor is no more." At the age of 67 years he gave up life's battle. He was a prominent member of Bergen's church and gave freely to the cause of Christianity. He leaves six children, John Langland and Mrs. O. C. Holland of harden county, Sivrin, Olena, Jacob and Martin all residing at home. The funeral was held Sunday, John Sivde, one of his former near neighbors conducting the service at the house. Mr. Sivde paid a deserved tribute to the one he had known and associated with for so many long years. Rev. Smedal conducted the service at the church. His discourse was listened to by one of the largest congregations ever assembled at a funeral in Roland. His sermon was a tribute to the deceased, speaking of his patience and christian spirit and his influence in the community. The children desire to express their most profound thanks to neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted during the sickness and death of their dear father.
