From Nevada Representative December 21, 1904

Prof. J. L. Budd of Ames died on Tuesday of this week in New Mexico, whither he had gone with his wife and daughter, Miss Etta Budd, to spend the winter. Prof. Budd was one of the early members of the faculty of the Agricultural College and held his position at the head of the horticultural department until about ten years ago, when he quietly retired; and since that time he has been living at Ames during the summers, but frequently seeking milder climate in the winters. For the past two or three years his health has been obviously declining, and to those who knew his condition, his death is not a matter of great surprise. Prof. Budd was a very capable and most estimable man, successful in his own affairs and during his years of activity a very useful factor in the college. His death will be greatly regretted in a circle of acquaintance and association which is much broader than the state.
