*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: John Meiers' grave stone gives his name as "John H. Meiers" but this obituary gives his name as "John Frederick Meiers." On April 29, 1908 the Nevada Representative, obviously mistakenly, reported his death as that of "Charles Meier," see below.

Charles Meier

Charles Meier, one of Story county's worthy citizens died at his home in Ames last Monday. He was about 70 years of age and a native of Germany. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his death. His funeral was held at Ames today, and the burial in the Catholic cemetery of Nevada.

John F. Meiers died Monday at his home in Ames after an illness of about four months, and his funeral was conducted Wednesday by Father Renier, at the Catholic church in Ames, and interment was in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.

John Frederick Meiers was born in Germany June 24, 1832, and died in Ames, April 27, 1908 and his age was therefore 75 years, 10 months and 3 days. He came to America at the age of twenty-eight, just before the breaking out of the Civil War; and, like a host of his young countrymen, soon after took up arms in behalf of his adopted country. He served in Company F, the 11th New Jersey volunteers, from September 3, 1862, till be was honorably discharged June 6, 1865, at the close of the war; was in the engagement at Gettysburg and other conflicts. He subsequently lived for a number of years at Lanark, Illinois, and in the spring of 1885 settled on a farm south of the Iowa State College which continued his home till he moved into Ames four years ago. He was a devoted Catholic and died in the full enjoyment of the faith of his early years. He leaves a wife and twelve children nearly all of whom were at his bedside at the time of his death or shortly before. The children who reside in Story county are Mrs. Robert Kelley and his stepson, John McDonald, both of Nevada; Mrs. W. T. Guise, Mrs. John Snyder, Mrs. Charles Hallowell, and Charles Meier all of Ames.
