Obituary for Gene Edward Fertig

Gene Fertig, 89, of Fort Worth, Texas and formerly of Collins, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Kindred Hospice of Fort Worth, Texas. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa. Immediately following the committal service, the family invites friends to join them for a time of refreshments and fellowship at the Collins Community Center.

Gene was born on November 19, 1926 in Maxwell, Iowa to Hugh and Virginia (Boitnott) Fertig. He attended Collins High School and graduated in 1944. Following high school, he joined the Air Force so he could take advantage of the GI Bill and go to college. He married Mildred Kimberley at the Collins Christian Church on December 23, 1946. Gene graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1951. Following college Gene began a career in the insurance industry. Gene and Mildred resided in many states before Fort Worth, Texas became their permanent residence in 1975. He was a member of the Collins Christian Church and Ridglea Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. Gene had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved helping people and was known as “Mr. Fix It” in his neighborhood. Running, golfing, volunteering, participating as a board member was a vital part of Gene’s life.

Those left to cherish his loving memories are his wife of 69 years Mildred; children Michael (Karen) Fertig, Scott (Pauline) Fertig, Pamela (Phil) Hinrichs, and Judah (Rebecca) Fertig; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; 2 sisters Pat Caulkins and Joann (Bob) Gates.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Jack Fertig.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Collins Christian Church.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing has been entrusted with the care of Gene and his family.
