Obituary for Norbert John Kash

Norbert J. Kash, 92, of Colo, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 at Windsor Manor in Nevada. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo, Iowa. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Burial will follow at the St. James Cemetery, also in Colo.

Norbert was born in Dundee, Iowa on June 6, 1924 to Clarence and Mary (Kenna) Kash. He attended Lamont High School and graduated in 1941 at the age of 16. Following school he worked as a dairy cow tester and, during World War II, served in the U.S. Army as a food inspector. After the war, Norbert attended college at Iowa State University and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in dairy husbandry. Norbert married his beloved Martha Hopkins at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo on Jan. 10, 1953. Together they raised their family of seven successful children. Martha and Norbert lived in several states throughout their sixty years together - Iowa, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona. Norbert was an accomplished banker (Second Vice President - Central National Bank, Chicago and owner of two central Illinois State banks), a businessman and farmer. He was a devout Catholic and enjoyed genealogy, woodworking, hiking, reading, and telling stories. Norbert published an inspiring autobiography in 2009, entitled 'A Life Filled With Miracles'.

Those left to cherish his loving memories are brother Albert; children Patrick (Teresa) Kash, Joseph Kash, Angela (Anthony) Krainik, Anthony (Nancy) Kash, Monica Kash, Margaret (Jean-Baptiste) Lassarat, and Rosemary (Daniel) Cheke; grandchildren Elizabeth Fischer, Joni Nightingale, Megan Brue, Kristine Kash, Emily Kash, Julia Lassarat, Charlotte Lassarat, Patrick Cheke, Nicholas Cheke, and Zachary Cheke; great-grandchildren Harper, Brady, Kashton, Sebastian, Vincent, and Gentry.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha, infant son Timothy, sister Evelyn (“Dickie”) Smith, and daughter-in-law Shelley Kash.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either St. Mary's Catholic Church or Colo Public Library, both in Colo, IA.

Fredregill Funeral Home, in Zearing, has been entrusted with the care of Norbert and his family.
