Funeral Services Held Monday for George Connolly

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:30 at St. Patrick's Catholic church for the late George Connolly, 84, who passed away Friday at 11:47 a. m. at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, where he had been since the preceding Sunday evening when struck by a passing autoist as he was crossing Lincoln highway at ninth street. Death had been due to shock.

His pastor, the Reverend James S. Mahoney officiated at the last rites which were attended by a number of relatives and friends, a number of whom were from Colo.

Mrs. Freda Prati was at the organ accompanying Alma Baldus and Helen Plavits of St. Patrick's choir who sang appropriate hymns during the reading of the requiem service.

The casket bearers were Carl Irish, Henry Fischer, M. Praty, James Curtis, Claude Moran, and M. R. Purkhiser.

Committal was in the Catholic cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away October 18, 1943.

Born December 16, 1861, Mr. Connolly came to Nevada when a young lad. He attended the Nevada Schools as a boy when the school building stood across south from the courthouse square.

He was married on Feb. 21, 1887 to Harriet Skinner, a native Gloucester, England, at the Catholic parsonage in Nevada by the late Father M. S. Murphey. To this union three sons were born, two of whom, Frederick and Joseph, passed away in infancy.

The deceased is survived by his son Ray Connolly of Nevada and by his granddaughter, Marcia Connolly, a freshman at the University of Iowa.

Following their marriage, Mr. Connolly and his bride lived the first three years of their married life at Smayville in Story county. They then purchased the farm located east of Nevada where they continued to live until moving into the home at 1030 Tenth street a number of years ago. Here Mr. and Mrs. Connolly celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary Feb. 21, 1937.

Mr. Connolly was a man of wide acquaintance. During the years of active farming he had been interested in the raising of fine horses. He was a man of high integrity and honesty and his friends were legion.

A Rosary service was held Saturday evening at the Morfoot Funeral Home where the body lay in state surrounded by floral tributes of friends. A number of spiritual bouquets were also given in his honor.

The committal service at the graveside was conducted by Father Mahoney.
