Obituary for Roger John Wilson

Roger J. Wilson, 84, of Slater died July 21, 2016 at the Madrid Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday July 26 at 11:00 am at the Slater United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Slater City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 pm at the Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater.

Roger was born on March 25, 1932 in Buck Creek Iowa to John O. and Bessie E. (Hill) Wilson. He attended the Buck Creek High School where he lettered in baseball and basketball all four years and sang in the chorus. He graduated from high school in 1949 and continued his education at the Upper Iowa University, graduating with a degree in Music in 1953.

Roger served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, taking basic training at Camp Pickett, Virginia. He served in Japan, Korea and then Hawaii. After being discharged from the service, he began working at the Hopkinton Coop Creamery.

He married his beloved wife of 58 years, Janice Willard from Hopkinton on January 26, 1958. Roger moved his young family to Slater in November of 1961 where he worked at the Slater Creamery making cheese. Roger continued working in various dairies in the Des Moines area and retired October 31, 1997 from Roberts Dairy (Prairie Farms). Roger and Janice also owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Polk City from 1972 until 1987.

Roger deeply loved his family. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies, singing in the church choir and woodworking in his garage. He was a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan and he actively watched (or listened to) every ballgame that he could. (Sometimes he watched a game on t.v. and listened to another one on the radio at the same time.) He enjoyed offering his time and efforts to his home church, Slater United Methodist Church, and to his hometown, Slater.

Roger is survived by his wife Janice of the Madrid Home; children, Diann (Gary) McMillen of Granger; Stuart Wilson of Boone and Steven (Laura) Wilson of North Mankato, MN; granddaughter, Jordyn Berry of Cedar Rapids; and sister Elda (Wilson) Landers of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ralph and Rodney.
