--A rain and wind storm Monday afternoon tore some trees and fences that had survived Friday's storm but no great harm was done in town. The saddest incident was the killing of Gilbert Hanson by lightning at Green's Lake.

KILLED BY LIGHTNING

Gilbert Hanson, aged twenty seven and living in the house south of O. B. Alderman's residence was killed by lightning while fishing Monday afternoon in Green's Lake in Grant township. Roy Crane, his brother-in-law. was with him at the time and was severely shocked but recovered to tell the tale--what little he knows. They were standing by the lake about fifteen feet apart, fishing and did not flee from the approaching storm both because there was no shelter near and because the fish were expected to bite well during the rain. This was the situation as it began to rain and as Crane had a sensation of a shock. He lay for about three quarters of an hour in the rain, when he woke up to find himself lying in the mud and his companion dead. He went to the house of F. W. Penfield haf a mile away, and Mr. Penfield hitched up and brought the body to town. Hanson was marked by the lightning on the back of the head and on the neck, shoulder and breast; and Crane also had some burns and a general feeling of soreness but a profound thankfulness, that, owing perhaps to rain, he was able to get up at all. A coroner's inquest was held over Hanson's body Monday by Justice Welty, the finding being in accordance with the above facts.

Gilbert Hanson ws an industrious and worthy young man and leaves a wife and two children. He had been employed during the winter as night man at the electric light plant but of late he had been working at the tile factory. The greatest sympathy is felt for his little family so suddenly bereft.

From Nevada Representative July 10, 1901
