Funeral Service for S. E. Eckard Thursday Afternoon

Funeral service was held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of the Brethen in Fernald for Samuel E. Eckard with Rev. J. A. Eby officiating.
Burial was in the Murphy cemetery east of Fernald.
The following obituary was read at the funeral service:
"Samuel Elijah Eckard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius A. Eckard, was born July 30, 1870, in McClain county, Illinois, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Wood, near McCallsburg, Iowa, May 6, 1946, at the age of 75 years, nine months and six days.
Son of pioneer parents, he came to Iowa at the age of six months where he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of a few years he spent in Nebraska.
At the age of 21 he was united in marriage with Martha L. Alderman of Ames, Iowa. To this union were born five children, three girls and two boys. Twin girls, Fae and Fanie, and a son, Marion Arwin, passed away in infancy. The older son, Joseph Cornelius died at the age of 15 years, leaving only the oldest daughter, Margaret Ester. His wife also preceded him in death.
From a small boy, Mr. Eckard was interested and active in the church endeavors in the United Brethen church of Ames and was a firm believer in the word of God. In his last months his greatest wish was fulfilled, that of seeing his two grandsons and a nephew return from military service.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Harry Wood of McCallsburg, a nephew, Mr. Marion L. Eckard of Ames, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren."

Note: Martha/Marthy/Mary L. Alderman was the daughter of Joseph Purley Alderman and Martha Jane (Pierce) Alderman.
