Dr. John Heath Tinker, MD, 74, of Ames, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Dr. Tinker was born May 18, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Leonard Henry and Georgia Louise (Reeves) Tinker. He graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1959 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1964. He was Valedictorian at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1968, where he received his medical degree. In 1972, he completed an internship and one year residency in surgery, and residency in anesthesiology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr. Tinker served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps Reserves as a major and held the position of chief of anesthesia and operating services at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. After serving in the military, Dr. Tinker moved to Rochester, Minnesota to practice at Mayo Clinic from 1974 until 1983. For the next 14 years, he was Professor and Head of Anesthesia at the University of Iowa College of Medicine before moving to Omaha in 1997 to become Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he continued to work until his retirement in 2008. He was the co-author of two major textbooks and many other works in anesthesiology and was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.
On March 18, 1989, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Howard in Tabor, Iowa.
John was a contributor to Muskie-Hunter Magazine. He enjoyed fishing, building model ships and planes, woodworking, and playing golf and tennis.
John is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Ames; his former wife, Martha Iuen-Tinker of Des Moines; his daughters: Deborah (Craig) Grandgenett of Nevada, Iowa, Karen (Bernie) Tinker-Sobierajski of Melbourne, Australia, Juliette (Dan) Tinker-Zimmerman of Boise, Idaho, Rachael Tinker of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Laura Tinker of Spirit Lake, Iowa; his sister, Marianne (James) Miller of Lewes, Delaware; and his grandchildren: Andrew, Matthew, Ryan, Jennifer, Luke, Nicholas, Bryce and Alison. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday, February 21, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, Iowa (1418 Fawcett Pkwy). Funeral services will be 5 p.m. also at the funeral home with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 22, at Tabor Cemetery in Tabor, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Iowa or the University of Nebraska Foundations to fund a lectureship in Dr. Tinker’s name.
