From Nevada Representative March 12, 1890

D. A. Bigelow.

D. A. Bigelow died at his home in Ames Sunday morning, March 9th 1890, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Bigelow was born in Chester, Massachusetts, Nov. 24, 1839, and moved to Kewanee, Illinois, in 1856. In 1862 he enlisted and joined Co. A, 124 Ills. Vols. and served until the close of the war. He was quarter-master and did faithful service to his country. He came to this county and located at Ames in 1868 where he has since resided a successful merchant and an influential citizen. Mr. Bigelow was one of our strong men--intelligent and well informed on all the live questions of the day. He was a prominent member of the Ames Baptist church, an earnest Sunday school worker, an interested member of the public school board, a staunch friend of the Agricultural College, an active participant in G. A. R. matters, and an earnest aggressive Republican in his political relations. In the National Republican convention of 1888 he was a delegate from this district, and at the time of his death was chairman of the county central committee.

Mr. Bigelow was domestic in his spirit and habits and to him there was ho place like his home. The affection there was strong and mutual. He was kindly disposed toward the unfortunate and was generous in his charity though modest in giving. His funeral at Ames, yesterday, under the direction of the Masonic fraternity assisted by the G. A. R. Post, was largely attended. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn a great loss. The entire community extend to them heartfelt sympathy.

In the death of Mr. Bigelow Ames, the county, and the State have lost a worthy man and a patriotic citizen.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Daniel Ames Bigelow was married to Sarah E. Moore. His four children mentioned were: Margaret Moore Bigelow, Robert E. Bigelow, Cassie Pearl Bigelow and Alida J. Bigelow.
