From Nevada Representative February 24, 1886

Obituary.

Died, in his rooms at the Court House, Tuesday morning, February 23rd 1886, Michael Daugherty, aged nearly 60 years.

Mr. Daugherty was a native of Maryland, and previous to his coming to Iowa lived for a long time in the State of Kentucky and Indiana. He was a Union Soldier for about a year during the rebellion, going from Iowa Centre this county. He was a member of Company R, 13th Iowa Infantry. During the past ten or fifteen years he has been connected to various capacities with county business at the court house and jail, having died with his harness on as janitor and bailiff. The disease which caused his death was contracted in the army, and for twenty years has slowly worn his life away, causing him at times great suffering. But through it all, up to the hour of his death, he bore his ills bravely and even cheerfully, and went forth into the mysterious beyond saying, "I am not afraid to die." He leaves four children, Mrs. D. E. McKim, and three others unmarried to mourn his loss. Mr. Daugherty was a man of many excellent qualities, and in whatever place he was called to serve,m always did his duty promptly, honestly and efficiently. He was kindly regarded by the general community, and had, and will long retain a warm spot in the hearts of comrades. His family have the heartfelt sympathy of all.

His funeral services will be attended at the court house to-morrow at 9:45 A. M., under the direction of the Grand Army Post of this place, after which the remains will be taken to Iowa Centre for burial.

From Nevada Representative March 3, 1886

--The funeral of Mr. Dougherty was held at the court house as announced, and his remains were taken by a delegation of his comrades of the Nevada Post to Iowa Centre for burial. Many more would have gone had not the inclemency of the weather made it perilous to health.
