From Nevada Representative February 17, 1886

Obituary.

Died at his home in Nevada, Iowa, Saturday morning February 18th, 1886, Samuel Butt, aged a little over 61 years.

Mr. Butt was born at Russelville, Ohio, December 26th, 1824. In early manhood he moved to Warren county Illinois, and four years later, Oct. 23, 1856 married L. C. Talbott. Ten years afterwards he moved to Iowa and took up his abode in Nevada.

In 1877 he joined the M. E. Church of Nevada, since which time he has continued a consistent member, honoring in conversation and life his profession of faith. Indeed, during the whole twenty years of his Iowa citizenship, he has gone in and out before out people without reproach, securing by his kindly and unassuming ways the respect and good will of all who knew him. His funeral was largely attended at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon, the services being thoughtfully and feelingly conducted by Rev. I. Reid, assisted by Revs. Jeffrey and Fegtly. The obsequies were under the general direction of the Masonic fraternity, and the remains of their deceased brother were laid up their last resting place with the impressive burial rites of the order.

In his death his family have occasion for great sorrow and the community for sincere regret.

The following memorial resolutions were passed by the Masonic Lodge:

WHEREAS, It has pleased the Supreme Master to call from among us on the 18th day of February A. D. 1886, our esteemed Brother Samuel Butt.

Resolved: That in his death Nevada Lodge has lost one of its most exemplary members, one who though quiet in deportment was always careful that his conduct should be in full accord with the tenets of our time honored institution. This county, in which he lived, has lost an honorable and upright citizen, his family a devoted and faithful husband and father.

We deeply deplore the loss and sincerely regret his death and extend to his wife and children our heartfelt sympathy.
